But it is certainly an interesting theoretical design challenge. Ignoring political issues, what would make Iceland an open manufacturing paradise? What technology would they need to be 99% self-reliant (by mass) with some specified standard of living? And could they do it on, say, a 20 hour work week for 25% of the population? And what else would they need to know and do so they could later help, say, Greece? Looking at the situation from that point of view, again, it seems like "money" is not very important. What is more important is to understand physical dependencies, how much time things take to do, and what material things people expect to consume. And that is a lot of work yet to be done -- even for a small country. It would help to have a list of items imported (organized by mass). Maybe such a list is available related to shipping records?
